Are you ready to transform that horrible time of the month? You can make your period less wasteful, more comfortable and more natural with a few simple steps.
Since switching to zero-waste period products, I have brought my waste down to basically zero. I don’t have to constantly remember fistfuls of tampons whenever I go anywhere. I don’t have purse pockets full of loud crinkly products waiting to be rendered unusable by the depths of my purse.
Instead, I have a minimalist, zero-waste, more pleasant period.
The Essentials
Menstrual cup
I really couldn’t have my period without my menstrual cup. It is the best thing since sliced bread! Anyone who knows me has heard about my love affair with my DivaCup. I know many of you may be skeptical but hear me out. Here are the reasons I love my cup and will literally never go back to disposables:
It’s healthier/safer: There is no risk of toxic shock syndrome or exposure to heavy chemical residues found in disposables. The DivaCup is made out of medical-grade silicone and is completely inert. It can be washed (or even boiled) and doesn’t cause any vaginal irritation.
It’s cheaper (like waaay cheaper). I used to go through at least one box of tampons each cycle and even using the cheapest ones, it cost over $60 a year. My DivaCup was $30! The manufacturer recommends that you replace it about once a year but, full disclosure, I took great care of mine and have used it for 5 years. In that amount of time, I saved over $250!
Lower maintenance: These days I don’t have to scrounge for a tampon every time I go to the bathroom. I just empty my cup in the morning and evening and the rest of the time I go to the bathroom without needing a purse-full of supplies!
There are two sizes: size 1 is meant for women who have not given birth and size 2 is for post-childbirth (or women over 30).
There is definitely a learning curve to the cup though. It might take a cycle or two to adjust and get the insertion method down but it is SO worth it! Want a full tutorial? Check out this post!
Reusable pads
Reusable pads are a great alternative to the menstrual cup if you don’t want to mess with inserting anything. They snap into your underwear and soak up blood just like a disposable pad (but without the crinkling noises and sticky tape). When you’re done, you just toss the pad in the laundry!
I have tried several different types of pads but they aren’t really my cup of tea. I personally have a heavier flow and would need like 6 post-partum sized pads throughout the day. What I love them for though is at night as a backup to my cup and they are also nice on the lightest days right at the end of my cycle if I don’t feel like wearing a cup.
My favorite brand is Glad Rags because they have 100% cotton pads (instead of pads with a plastic layer). It is more of an investment than a menstrual cup but I’m glad I have them and they saved a pair of underwear on the very first use!
Other Alternatives
There are a number of other alternatives but they all have certain issues (sea sponges need to be harvested from the ocean, period panties are made of plastic, etc.). Let me know in the comments if you have had success with something different but for me, reusable pads and menstrual cups really are the best go-to essentials!
Being Comfortable
Because comfort is important during this time of the month!
Hot water bottle: I find a hot water bottle much more soothing than an electric heating pad. I don’t need to be close to an outlet and I can walk around with my water bottle tucked into my waistband (it’s a good look!). I use a brand called Sanger and absolutely love it – I’ve had it for years and even use it when I don’t have my period!
Ginger and Turmeric tea: Ginger and turmeric are two amazing anti-inflammatories and great for period cramps! I like to slice a few pieces of fresh ginger or turmeric root and simmer them in water for awhile to make a tea. If you only have powdered turmeric and ginger, you can use them in a golden milk recipe. Also, make sure you stay hydrated and drink lots of water!
Slow Down: I have to admit, sometimes I can’t do it all and need some Netflix. When my body needs me to rest I try to listen. After all, your body is pushing out blood and tissue on its own – I think its okay to take it easy! Plus, watching early 2000s rom-coms takes my mind off the cramps. Indulge!
Treats: Grab some zero-waste treats from your favorite bulk bin or eat some chocolate. I usually try to stay away from soy and sugar (especially around my period) so I like to get a bar of my favorite local, organic, fair-trade soy-free dark chocolate. The packaging is recyclable and I am supporting an incredible local business. Win-win!
These essentials help make your monthly cycle more comfortable, more natural, and a whole lot less wasteful!
